The symphonic scale that Schubert brought to string quartet writing is here evident in his Grand Duo for piano duet, a masterpiece that indeed inspired Joseph Joachim to score it for full orchestra after Schubert’s death. In contrast, Andantino Varie is an intimate conversation between two pianists at one piano. Bookending these works are two mature masterpieces by Haydn, his impassioned Piano Trio in F sharp minor, and his majestic final completed string quartet.
